India's two airline companies Indigo and GoFirst are facing a lot of problems these days due to P&W (Pratt & Whitney) engines. Actually, P&W engines are fitted in the aircraft of these airline companies, which are suffering from faults. Because of which more than 50 aircraft of Indigo and Go First are gathering dust and companies have to operate by taking aircraft on lease. The country's largest airline Indigo is looking at several options to deal with this problem. These include options to extend the lease period of the aircraft, re-induct the aircraft and lease the aircraft with crew.
Problems faced due to Russia-Ukraine war
In fact, due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the supply of Pratt & Whitney engine parts remains a major problem. Because of this, maintenance of engines is not being done. Therefore, many planes have been forced to stand. A senior government official said in a conversation with news agency PTI-language that at least 25-25 aircraft of Indigo and GoFirst airlines are forced to stand due to P&W engine problems. The engine maker is also not able to deliver on time due to problems related to the supply chain.
When contacted, a Pratt & Whitney spokesperson did not specify the number of planes affected, but said it expected the supply pressure to ease by the end of the year. According to the flight tracking website flightradar24.com, as on 26 February, a total of 39 Indigo aircraft were out of operations. These include 28 aircraft of the A320 Neo class and 11 aircraft of the A321 class.
Indigo's fleet includes more than 300 aircraft
IndiGo has more than 300 aircraft in its fleet for which engines are supplied by P&W and CFM. At the same time, GoFirst Airline has about 60 aircraft in its fleet and P&W is the only engine supplier. In this regard, an Indigo spokesperson said that the airline is in touch with its original equipment manufacturer partners so that its flight network and operations remain intact.
