After the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) initiated action, Air India on Friday said it acknowledges the delay in reporting the urination incident on the New York-Delhi flight and is working to rectify the lapse. All necessary steps are being taken. This incident took place on November 26 last year when a passenger urinated on a female passenger in Air India flight AI-102 coming from New York to Delhi. But this matter came to the notice of aviation regulator DGCA only on January 4.
DGCA imposed a fine of 30 lakhs on Air India
The DGCA on Friday said it has imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh on Air India and also suspended the license of the pilot-in-command of the concerned flight in connection with the incident. A fine of Rs three lakh has also been imposed on the director of the airline's 'in-flight service'. This action has been taken for various violations. In this whole matter, an Air India spokesperson said, "We have received today's order from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and we are studying it."
According to the spokesperson, the airline is also raising staff awareness about policies to deal with incidents involving unruly passengers. "Air India is committed to the safety and well-being of its passengers," he said.
The accused expressed disagreement on the findings of the investigation
On the other hand, Shankar Mishra, accused of urinating on a female passenger, disagreed with the findings of the internal inquiry and said that the air travel ban imposed on him for 4 months is based on a wrong understanding of the plane's layout. In a statement issued through his lawyer, Mishra said that the appeal against the verdict is being processed as per the rules in force.
It is alleged that on November 26 last year, Shankar Mishra was drunk on an Air India flight from New York to Delhi and allegedly urinated on an elderly woman. However, Shankar Mishra gave a new twist to the whole matter by claiming that the woman had urinated on him.
